Zoya Akhtar’s ‘Gully Boy' based on the tale of underground street rappers of Mumbai with the lead cast Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt, have commenced with an overwhelming reaction at the box office and have set the cash registers ringing. Having inspired by the lives of rappers Divine and Naezy, people rushed into the theaters to see the movie. The film had an additional advantage of Valentine's Day release and also, a long weekend ahead. The film has received huge appreciation from the critics and the audience alike.
As far as the latest report on Boxofficeindia.com is concerned, on its first day, the film has managed to rake in a total of Rs 18.5 crore on Thursday. Such an opening figure is the second best ever for Ranveer Singh after Rohit Shetty’s 'Simmba' and the, of course, the best one for Alia Bhatt. The film has registered phenomenal collections in the metropolitan cities especially Mumbai, Pune and Bengaluru which has put up good numbers.
The film is on a competition with the biggest openers in Mumbai and Pune circle. The film had a wide release of 3350 screens across the country and has been driven by a strong word of mouth. The Valentine's Day collection has given a boost to it and the film is expected to pick up even further this weekend.
'Gully Boy' had its world premiere at the 69th Berlin International Film Festival where it received a huge response from the audience as well as the international media. The movie was screened as part of the Berlinale Special screenings strand.
