There are moments in our life when our closed ones are really very upset and are quite emotional too. In such a circumstance you want to help but you fall short of actions and words. You find yourself in the helpless state where you don’t understand what you should really do to make the other person feel good.
So, here are some tips which will provide comforting help to them whenever they are in distress.
1. Don't give them solutions
If someone is crying, the best solution at the moment is to not speak much. Give the other person some space to breathe. If a person is crying it is obvious the reason for that is a bigger one so let them light up their mood by letting them cry. It is advisable that you don’t try to give them a solution to their problem because doing that at that moment is not going to help at all.
2. Don't say things like ' It isn't that bad'
A lot of times in order to make other people feel good what we really do are saying things like ‘It’s really not bad’ but saying so will make the other person feel isolated. They will feel more upset about it. So it is better for you to support them at the moment.
3. Sit in the storm with them
When someone is upset they need you, make them feel that you are there for them. Not doing anything or saying anything will also be of great help when the person is upset. So show your presence to them when they need someone.
4. Make them feel good
If you could get them to stop crying or say something that can make them feel better it can really help them. So you can be witty or humorous at the moment. But you need to be cautious when you are doing this because it can hurt them
5. Physical affection
Physical affection is another way of making them feel good. You can hug the person, put a hand on their shoulder depending on the intimacy level and the comfort level with the person.
