Reunions are seen to be the driving force in the final season of Game of Thrones as the main characters come together for the most awaited battle against the undead. But one reunion happens to have been exceptionally heart touching which is the one between Sansa Stark and Theon Greyjoy. “I want to fight for Winterfell, Lady Sansa. If you’ll have me,” says Theon. Sansa gets all teary-eyed as she rushes to embrace her long-gone family member Theon. Over the past two seasons, we’ve seen Sansa reunite with her long-lost siblings Arya, Jon, and Bran, but she didn’t shed a tear when she saw any of them. Her reunion with Theon has a more deepened impact because of their shared past.
To understand Sansa’s emotions, it’s necessary to recall the relationship she shared with Theon which was fairly awful in the past. Theon first betrayed Sansa’s brother Robb Stark in season 2, seizing Winterfell under his father’s negative influence. He had to bear a very weird name, “Reek,” being ruthlessly tortured and brutalized by Ramsay Bolton. As Reek, he was a broken man from within(we know what bad Ramsay did to him), meek and passive, unable to take any step against Ramsay when he raped Sansa right in front of him. Sansa reminded him of his original identity as Theon Greyjoy and asked for his help to escape the Boltons for good.
Theon’s return to Winterfell in season 8 is the most awaited step of the courage of his convictions after Ramsay’s torture literally left him nowhere. Getting back to Sansa demonstrates his rejuvenated loyalty towards the Starks, but it also shows him taking a stand for himself as a person, which Sansa found out after seeing him so broken — and after making the same emotional journey back from abuse herself. He could have easily said back with his sister Yara as they sailed to get hold of the Iron Islands back, but he chose to find Sansa and fight alongside her.
