That’s a first, Indian Army has issued an advertisement in newspapers for recruiting women soldiers into the military police. Yes, you heard that right! The development comes three months after the government announced that women will be taken into the force in the "Personnel Below Officer Rank" (PBOR) category.
According to the Army advertisement, “the application window for recruitment of "soldier general duty (Women Military Police)" that opened on April 25h today will be closed on June 8.
"In a historic decision, Modi govt has decided to induct women, for the first time in Personnel Below Officer Rank, in corps of Military Police. It's a huge step towards further empowering women and improving their representation in our armed forces," tweeted the BJP on January 18.
The Army website says, the Corps of Military Police stands for preserving "good order and discipline and to prevent breaches of the same by persons serving in or attached to the regular Army".The Army is basically looking for police assistance to take on responsibilities such as rape and molestation cases, assistance in the evacuation of villages during cross-border conflicts, crowd control of women and children, frisking of women during cordon-and-search. The PBOR also runs prisoner-of-war camps in complex circumstances.
Such a move from the government is hugely appreciated in today's day where women don’t hide behind the doors when it comes to protecting their nation, be it in the field of the military which includes all the three, aviation, navy, or the army.
We’ve seen examples in the recent past of woman achieving heights in these fields going in the same line along with men. We can absolutely look forward to this chance where the woman would ones again create history by battling for the nation on the ground.
