NASA is all set to make its interplanetary adventure and has invited the applications to the public to send their names all way to Mars. The Mars rover is expected to launch in July 2020 and will supposedly be reaching in February 2021. So if you have ever wished to set your foot on the red planet. Here is the chance for you (Not exactly though)
In its public engagement campaign, NASA has invited names from the public till September 30 which will be sent on the Mars. The names submitted will not only be displayed on souvenir passes but on the silicon microchips as well which will be abroad on Mars. The size of the name on the chips will be smaller than one-thousandth the width of a human hair (75 nanometres), which means millions of name can be displayed on the chip.
"As we get ready to launch this historic Mars mission, we want everyone to share in this journey of exploration," said Thomas Zurbuchen, Associate Administrator for NASA's Science Mission Directorate (SMD) in Washington, DC.
Talking about this voyage NASA said the exploration seeks to find the signs of microbial life, planet’s climate and geology.
"It's an exciting time for NASA, as we embark on this voyage to answer profound questions about our neighbouring planet, and even the origins of life itself," Thomas added.
However, this is not the first time when NASA is planning to engage with the public. In its earlier mission as well it engaged with the people. In 2015, nearly 827,000 people signed up to add their names to a silicon microchip on board the robotic spacecraft which were displayed on the microchips.
