According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), more than 21 million people across the globe are affected by schizophrenia. Do you know what exactly schizophrenia is? Are you a victim of it? How can you really combat it? On world schizophrenia day let’s find all the answers related to it and why is this day even celebrated in the first place.

Everything you need to know about schizophrenia:

Does that happen with you that people don’t actually understand you and do you feel that you are not able to apprehend what exactly the people around you are trying to convey? At times this contradiction or disbelief about everything and that too rational things makes you the target of everyone. People begin to consider you mad. If it happens with you most often (for a period of 4 weeks) it is likely that you are a victim of schizophrenia.

What exactly is it?

It is basically a mental disorder when people build their own altered belief and reality despite the rational arguments and shreds of evidence. People also might have a perception of seeing, hearing, touching, tasting or smelling things that don’t even exist in actuality. While the problem mostly strikes between the ages of 16 and 30 people have to suffer from it lifelong.

How can it be cured?

It is difficult to respond and react when someone makes strange and illogical explanations. However, you should try to make them at ease by talking things like everyone has a different perception. Don’t act weird or make comments which make them feel left out. However, the most important thing is medical treatment. Medications can help to treat it. Apart from the medications, counselling can also be helpful to the victims. However, people have to live with it throughout their life. It can only be managed by the medication and counselling.

Why is this day celebrated every year?

Every year on May 24, world schizophrenia day is celebrated to reduce the stigma attached with it and also to spread the awareness about the same.
