Is Perfectionism Good or Bad?
The research published by the American Psychological Association says that drive to perfectionism has recently been amplified. There are higher expectations to meet societal pressures to succeed among the youth which makes them compete with each other because they feel that perfectionism is necessary to feel safe, socially connected and worth.”. However, the studies further point out that this increase in perfectionism may in part be affecting the psychological health citing higher levels of depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts than a decade ago.
So, when does your greatest strength can turn into your biggest weakness? Here are some signs of unhealthy perfectionism:
Setting unfeasible goals:
Instead of setting realistic standards one starts striving for unfeasible goals that are impossible to attain. It never leads to completing tasks because you are always stuck in completing tasks that were never meant to be completed.
Getting obsessed about work:
The person instead of working hard choose to be obsessed with the work. They start looking for past mistakes time and again. They are constantly so worried about every task they fail to achieve the goals.
Distrust on everyone:
The attitude of a person experiences a drastic change as they always want full control of every task. They are not able to trust anyone because they always want to do things in their way.
Cannot handle criticism:
It becomes hard to take criticism of anyone, be it any constructive criticism. They become so obsessed with being perfectionist they resist anything negative.
Affect mental health:
Constant obsession with the work affects the health of the concerned person. They are always seen as taking stress about something which can lead to anxiety, depression.
