It wasn’t love at first sight for Sridevi and Boney Kapoor. Though the producer was visibly smitten by her, she took her own sweet time to fall in love. She was wooed by many top Bollywood actors – right from Jeetendra to Mithun Chakraborty – when she reigned as a top actress, but she chose Boney Kapoor over everyone else. And her decision came as a huge surprise to the entire industry. The legendary actress married Boney Kapoor is 1996 and the couple was madly in love even today. They shared a very happy relationship and their love for each other knew no bounds. In fact, Sridevi met her producer husband on one of her movie sets.
Recalling her same meeting with Boney Kapoor, Sridevi in an earlier interview, had said, “I was shooting in Chennai, when Boneyji first approached me and expressed his desire to sign me for his forthcoming movie MR.INDIA. I, being an introvert, just nodded and asked him to meet my mother who used to handle my film assignments.” The producer immediately consulted her mother, who was on the set, sitting nearby. “My mother quoted a substantially huge amount of Rs 10 lakh (almost double) as my fees just to dampen his spirits and get rid of him. However, to her surprise, Boneyji offered her a cheque of Rs 11 lakh, thus winning over my mother’s heart,” she added.
Later, when the actress came on board, Boney ensured that she was treated like a princess. He gradually won her heart with his behavior and chivalrous nature. There were no vanity vans in those days but Boney Kapoor exclusively brought one for her. He was always around her taking care of her smallest needs.
Ask her when did she come close to him and she recalls some of the incidents that helped her grow fond of him. “I came close to Boneyji quite late when I found him to be a true human being. I cried over his shoulder when my mother expired during the making of Chandni. Later, at the time of my father’s death, he was close to me. Thus, gradually I realised I was destined to be Mrs. Boney Kapoor,” concluded Sridevi.
