Sridevi and Madhuri Dixit are two of the most iconic actresses Bollywood has seen. Versatile, talented, they earned a massive fan following for themselves. And when you have two similar talents working in the same industry, rivalry or competition is bound to be there. Though these actresses were never self proclaimed rivals, they weren’t buddies either. But that’s pretty fair and we can’t blame them really. Insecurity often finds a place in such a competitive world. That doesn’t mean they hated each other, but definitely shared some cold vibes. Madhuri Dixit, in one of her interviews after the release of Aaja Nachle had confessed that she wasn’t good friends with Sridevi, but neither was she her rival.
When Madhuri was asked about her famous professional rivalry with Sridevi, she refused to tag their relationship as ‘rivals’. According to her, “That was more created than us having any rivalry because by the time I did Ek do teen… we were both very busy in our respective careers. She was busy with her work and I with mine; so we never came to doing any movie together. Perhaps that fuelled those notions of rivalry, but there was never any rivalry between us.” The actress agreed that she wasn’t even friends with Sridevi, but that was pretty natural to her. “I am not on buddy terms with anyone in the industry. I have more friends outside the industry than within. But whenever I meet anyone there is genuine fondness, there is genuine respect and we pick up from where we had left. With Sridevi too, whenever we met, we respected each other and still have a fondness for each other,” she added.
Though a two hero or a heroine project isn’t a big deal at present, there was a time when it was a hit formula. And you can just imagine having Bollywood’s two loved actresses – Madhuri and Sridevi in a single frame. This was a dream for many filmmakers which unfortunately never saw the light of day. But they had this one chance where imagination could have been a reality. Yes, Madhuri and Sridevi were signed together for a project but it never went on floors. Revealing details about the same, the Dil To Pagal Hai actress said, “There was one movie which got stuck for the longest time. I don’t even remember its name. It’s one project for which we were together but it was stuck forever. I think Ramesh Sippy was its director and it also had Vinod Khanna and Sanjay Dutt in it. It was a multi-starrer planned sometime in the early ’90s.” Now that’s a big revelation right? Imagine Sanjay Dutt and Madhuri Dixit together with Sridevi; it’s like a cherry on the cake! That would have made for some stunning headlines back then. Unfortunately, the multi-starrer got shelved and we never saw Madhuri and Sridevi star together in one movie.
